It is getting close to the most wonderful time of the year in Cedar Hills – Family Festival! I am excited that we get to start off the summer festivities this year by being the first city in the area to host a full week of fun activities. This year Family Festival will be held May 31st through June 4th. Here is the list of events:

  • Tuesday – Swim Night at the PG pool
  • Wednesday – Car Show at Heritage Park and 3V3 Soccer Tournament at Mesquite Park
  • Thursday – Golf Tournament at the golf course, Fun Run at Cedar Ridge, and the Teen Festy Frenzy at Heritage Park
  • Friday – Carnival and Dinner & Movie at Heritage Park
  • Saturday – Parade, Carnival, Games, Entertainment and Fireworks

The Family Festival Committee is made up of volunteers throughout the community who put in a lot of time and effort to plan and organize these activities. They start in January and don’t stop until the festival is over. I appreciate all of their hard work and dedication as this truly is a wonderful week in our community.

In order to make each event successful, we still need many volunteers. Most of the shifts are two hours long and volunteering is a great way to meet others in the city and serve the community. Here are areas where we still need help:

  • Serving lunch at the Golf Tournament on Thursday afternoon
  • Being a chaperone at the Teen Festy Frenzy
  • Clean up after the Dinner & Movie
  • Helping those involved with the Parade on Saturday
  • Helping with Kids Games on Saturday. This is a great volunteer opportunity for kids ages 12+.
  • Helping at the Information Booth on Friday and Saturday
  • Park clean-up Saturday night

Every volunteer receives a free t-shirt and the everlasting gratitude of those who enjoy participating in the Family Festival. It really is a fun experience. I volunteer at almost every event and highly recommend it.

Every year we look for many residents who are willing to volunteer in a variety of ways on
committees or for events. These volunteers help us provide activities and services that make Cedar Hills a wonderful place to live. Opportunities range from helping for a few hours with a
service project or with a Family Festival event, to serving on a committee that meets regularly. I encourage all residents to help in any way you can.

Here are a list of committees and what they do.

Planning Commission – The duties of the Planning Commission include making recommendations to the City Council for adoption and amendment of the general plan and making recommendations to the City Council on adoption or amendment of land use ordinances, zoning maps, or official maps. They are also involved in making recommendations to the City Council on proposed subdivision plats and recommending an annexation policy. Meetings are generally set for the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm. Those interested in serving on the Planning Commission may find the application here.

Board of Adjustment – The Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body appointed for the benefit of residents in hearing requests to vary zoning and building ordinances set by the city. Meetings are scheduled as needed. Those interested in serving on the Board of Adjustment may find the application here.

Cultural Arts – The Cultural Arts Advisory Committee was created to provide opportunities for residents to enjoy arts within the community. This year the committee organized the Summer Concert Series at Heritage Park, the Children’s Art Show during Family Festival, the musical performance HONK! at Heritage Park, and is currently working on adding new activities. Those interested in serving on this committee may email frontdesk@cedarhills.org.

Family Festival – The Family Festival Committee is responsible for planning and implementing all activities for the annual Family Festival. This includes activities such as Swim Night, Firecracker Golf Tournament, car show, Fun Run, youth party, Dinner and Movie in the Park, parade, carnival, and fireworks. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the Family Festival events, please email familyfestival@cedarhills.org. You may find information on the 2016 Family Festival here.

Beautification, Recreation, Parks & Trails – The Beautification, Recreation, Parks & Trails Committee makes recommendations to the City Council on ways to enhance the community and develop and upgrade parks and trails. They host the annual summer pancake breakfast, the Yards of the Month program, and the annual City-wide service project. Those interested in serving on this committee should email frontdesk@cedarhills.org.

Youth City Council – The Youth City Council (YCC) consists of teens throughout the community who work to provide family-friendly activities to the community throughout the year and raise money for the annual Santa’s Workshop, which provides Christmas gifts for Cedar Hills families in need. All students in 9th-12th grades who are interested in serving on the YCC may contact Nicole Allen at nallen@cedarhills.org. You may also find more information about the YCC here.
